Sin Will Take You Farther

   Webster's dictionary defines sin as:
1.An offense to God
2. Misdeed; a fault
3. Transgression of the Law of God
4. A vitiated state of human nature in which the self is estranged from God (vitiated is defined as contaminated, polluted, debased or perverted, to make ineffective or weak, invalidated.)

In GENESIS 25,we read about twin brothers, Jacob and Esau. I am going to concentrate on Esau and how sin took control of his life.

GENESIS 25:24-34 Tells the story of how the oldest brother, Esau, sold his birthright to his twin brother Jacob for some food.

DEUTERONOMY 21:17,tells us that a birthright was given to the firstborn, and that he received a double portion of all that the father had because the firstborn is the beginning of the father's strength.

Esau was the first born of Isaac and was his father's favorite. who was to inherit great wealth and lands from his father. But Esau took these gifts too lightly because he agreed to sell this birthright to his brother Jacob for some bread and pottage (a thick soup) of lentiles (vegetables like peas or beans).

GENESIS 25:32,34- "And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?"

"Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up and went his way: thus Esau sold his birthright."

Esau thought more about satisfying his immediate needs--his hunger and ..."thus Esau despised or cared little for his birthright." Esau considered his birthright and still chose to feed his appetite of the moment. Esau, a man who did not think ahead to the future, was self-centered ready to take his pleasures for the moment with no thought for the consequences ahead. He never considered where his sin would take him.

This happens even now, today. People think about getting saved and receiving all the blessings from God; but they still choose to stay in sin and feed their worldly appetite rather than serving God.

GENESIS 27:1-41- tells of how Jacob receives the blessings that were suppose to be Esau's. True, Jacob received these blessings by deception but I believe God allowed this to happen as part of Esau's punishment.

In GENESIS 27:34-41... Esau ..."cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry" when he discovered that Jacob had received the blessings that were meant to be for him, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father. ...Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me? ...And Esau lifted up his voice and wept."

Too late Esau realized what he had lost and only then did he cry out but not in repentance for what he had done but because he received nothing but leftovers. His sin had taken him farther than he wanted to go. He never counted on this happening when he was eating the soup he bought from Jacob.

This is also brought out in: HEBREWS 12:16-17 Lest there be any fornicator or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears."

In GENESIS 27:41 tells of the change in Esau's heart. "And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob."

Esau blamed everything on Jacob and did not take responsibility for his own actions. Esau's sold his precious birthright to Jacob; he could have said no. He didn't deserve to have the blessings that went along with this gift. He took these special privileges for granted. Esau did not repent in his heart but let the sin begin to grow and change him. He became hateful and disobedient. He wanted to kill his brother.

Just like in the song, SIN WILL TAKE YOU FARTHER THAN YOU WANT TO GO, "sin will cost you far more, than you want to pay". It cost Esau far more than what he was willing to pay. A bowl of soup and bread for all the wealth and blessings he could have received. Esau was remembered as one that was hated of God...

This is brought out in:
MALACHI 1:3 "And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness."

Romans 9:13 "As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated."

The song "SIN WILL TAKE YOU FATHER THAN YOU WANT TO GO" reminds us of this:

"So with pleasure and promises, sin took control, leaving me dying with nothing to show...

Sin can take you farther than you want to go. Slowly, but wholly taking control. Sin, will leave you longer, than you want to stay. Sin will cost you far more, than you want to pay."

In conclusion, when you allow sin to take control; your life gets out of control and you begin to serve those things you once thought were so pleasurable. That pleasure is a bondage that controls you. This is best said in:

II PETER 2:19 "While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome of the same is he brought in bondage."
