In Rom 8:37 we find
these most wonderful and impressive words, "Nay, in all these things
we are more than conquerors through him that loved us." It was and is
the voice of a conqueror who gave us this forceful passage of scripture
and his power to speak in such a manner was the direct result of his
determination to know nothing among his associate save Jesus Christ and
Him crucified. God is all powerful and when He sets out to do something,
there is none that can stay His hand. It is through the use of the divine
power that we can become more than conquerors. Since this power is so
mighty and is available to any and all who earnestly seek it, why do we
not have a militant and powerful church on earth? It is because of great
religious forces in the earth today have, by their tradition and human
leadership, separated the people from this power. Human leadership alone
is not able to call this power down from heaven. It takes Holy Ghost
leadership through consecrated and devoted men, as was the apostle Paul,
who are willing to let God have His way completely in their lives.
Paul was so great a conqueror over
sin and the devil that it was said of him that he turned the world upside
down. He was strong enough in Jesus Christ to wage a spectacular attack
upon the strongest fortifications of the devil. He stood out against the
great institution of paganism in his day almost single-handed and saw its
great stronghold crumble and fall one by one. He surely was more than a
conqueror through Jesus Christ. While it is true that we all cannot have
this Holy Ghost power in the same measure that Paul did, every one of us
can be more than conquerors over sin and the devil; for God promises never
to leave nor forsake us but will be with us to the very end. Even the
weakest saint can successfully run the Christian race, for Jesus said of
His followers, 'My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow
me; and I give them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither
shall any man pluck them out of my hand." God is ever standing at
our-side to give us the power to successfully overcome every attack of the
devil if we will earnestly seek His assistance.
The Spirit is Our Intercessor
Rom 8:26---The spirit helpeth our
infirmities---The Spirit is our Comforter and Guide, and we must strive
earnestly and sincerely to stay close enough to God so that we can feel
His guiding hand upon us. If we will acknowledge Him in all our ways and
lean not to our own understanding, He promises to direct our paths. Prayer
is more than just saying words. It takes the anointing of the Spirit to
make our prayer effective.
Verse 27---He maketh intercession
for the saints---It is wonderful indeed to have the Spirit of God dwelling
in our hearts so that He can direct our every activity and to help us to
know just what and how we should pray. The closer we get to God and the
more time we spend in prayer the more we are going to enjoy the blessings
of salvation.
Verse 28---All things works together
for good---When we are earnestly and sincerely serving God to the best of
our knowledge and ability He is going to take the best of our knowledge
and ability. He is going to take the best of care of us and He will not
let anything come our way except what is for our own good. Therefore, we
must praise Him for every trial that comes our way and strive with all of
our hearts to get the good out of each trial that He desires us to get.
This will give us that joy unspeakable and full of glory that Peter tells
about.
God is Our Protector
Rom 8:31---If God Be For Us---We now
that God is all powerful and that there is nothing too hard for Him.
Therefore if we are on His side, what have we to fear? David realized the
great protecting power of God and he said, "The Lord is on my side; I
will not fear: what can man do unto me. It is better to trust in the Lord
than to put confidence in man," God is our very best friend and no
one ever made a mistake by putting his trust in Him.
Verse 32---He that spared not His
own Son-This surely proves the great love of God for the lost men on the
earth by the sacrifice of His only begotten Son on the cruel cross of
Calvary. This should greatly increase our faith in Him and help us to
really believe that He will not withold any good thing from His trusting
children.
Verse 33---Who shall lay anything to
the charge of God's elect---God's elect are those that are living pure and
holy life acceptable in the sight of God, and the world will not be able
to justly lay any wrongdoing to their charge.
Verse 34---Who is he that condemneth---It
is the godly life of Jesus Christ and his followers that condemns the
world of sin. The sinner, as he takes note of the righteous life of the
saints, will be condemned for his life of sins. The victory of Jesus
Christ over death and His ascension to heaven at the right hand of the
Father verifies the perfection of the example He left us to follow.
God Has Power To Keep
Rom 8:35---Who shall separate us
from the love of Christ---There is nothing that can separate us from God
if we will only have the will to walk the strait and narrow way. In this
case the old saying, "Where there is a will there is a way" is
absolutely true. God is ever standing at our side to give us the grace and
courage to be a conqueror over every onslaught of the devil. He will never
leave us or forsake us, and if the ordeal takes our life He will give us
the grace to go through and land us safely in heaven, which is the
grandest deliverance anyone could possibly have.
Verse 36-For thy sake we are killed
all the day long---This is a quotation from Psa 44:22. God's true
followers have always been the victims of persecution and always will be
as long as the world stands, according to 2 Tim 3:12, "Yea and all
that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution."
Verse 37---We are more than
conquerors---God's unlimited power is always at our disposal when we call
upon Him with earnestness and sincerity. It is sin and the devil that we
are to be conquerors of and God promises us that if we will steadfastly
resist the devil he will have to flee. Therefore we can always have the
victory over the devil because God's Word says so.
God is Faithful
Rom 8:38-39---Paul certainly knew
from experience that there was no power great enough to separate the true
and devoted child of Christ from the love of God. He had endured and
conquered every attack that the devil could bring against him. He probably
suffered the greatest persecution of any man that ever lived, but through
it all he was able to rejoice and praise God that he was counted worthy to
suffer for his Master's sake. God is no respecter of persons and He will
do just as much for every one of us if we will set our faces like a flint
with a determination to go through. Paul truly was a conqueror of the
first rank and when he was about to leave for heaven he summed up his
victory thus, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that
day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his
appearing." And the most wonderful part of it all is that he is still
enjoying to the full his victory over sin and the devil. I do hope that
every reader of this remark will determine in his own heart and soul that
by the grace of God he is going to meet dear brother Paul in the New
Jerusalem.
The study of this lesson certainly
should impress us with absolute truth of the Master's words to Martha when
she desired Mary to leave Jesus' company and come and help her with the
serving. He said, "Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled
about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that
good part, which shall not be taken away from her." Our
eternity-bound soul is our most important possession and its welfare
should, by all means, be our greatest concern.
