Light
For All Men
"Let there be
light" is the first recorded statement of God. "And there was
light". And people ever since who prefer to see where they are going
have been very glad.
"Let there be moral and
spiritual light," God must have also said. The physical light is from
the Sun. The moral and spiritual light is from the Son. This eternally
important light has always been available to men.
God's revelation to lead men to
himself was clear from the start. And on top of that He gave each man a
conscience; the ability to seek light from above, and the revelation of
himself in nature. The result is "that they were without excuse"
In addition throughout the Old
Testament people were told to look for a bright, shining star that would
rise out of Judah. The star over Bethlehem pointed the way to that Light
from heaven when He was born on earth. He came and brought light to a dark
world by His life and death--God..."commanded the light to shine out
of darkness.... to give light of the knowledge of the glory of God.
No one rejects God's physical light.
It is necessary and appreciated. What a tragedy that many reject the
spiritual and moral light from above--so many try to light their own way
to heaven.
God's light for men will remain for
all future too. The New Jerusalem will have "no need of the sun,
neither of the moon, to shine in it...for the glory of God did lighten it,
and the Lamb is the light thereof.
"As long as I am in the world,
I am the light of the world," said Jesus. After that, the amount of
light that shines is up to Christians in many ways. How much spiritual
light do people receive as a result of their lives?
Men do not light a candle and then
put a bushel basket on top of it, Jesus said. That would be ridiculous.
But it is just as wrong when people claim to know Christ but hide that
relationship. People should see that there is life and light in our lives
by what we say, the places we go, the things we do with them and for them.
The spreading of the witness of Jesus Christ depends upon us, and the
eternal destinies of the man and woman next door depend upon how much
spiritual light they see and receive.
